Huckleberry (Gaylussacia baccata)

This species grows along with Lowbush Blueberries and at first glance can be easily assumed a blueberry, sharing in stature, growth form, and stunning fall foliage. (read more). Closer inspection of the berry reveals that it has a pit (?).  In the Great Lakes region we have this one species of Gaultheria while in the west there are many and occupy huge swaths of mountain ranges.  In the east and associated with the Allegheny Mountains the following species occurs.
